Brain Health and Balance
Did you know that 30-60% of Alzheimer’s patients could be notably more happy and interactive?
For those of you who have relatives who suffer with this, that is no surprise. This is a condition that robs the brain of memories, the ability to make new ones, confidence, the ability to communicate, and finally all sense of value. It gets frustrating, confusing, and debilitating.
Here is an amazing video showing the effects of specific music on Alzheimer’s patients.(1) Even this short little trailer brought tears to my eyes. I don’t think I want to watch the movie. I don’t much like to cry. But these were tears of joy, I think. The transformation was beautiful and powerful. Perhaps it has this effect on me, because of the personal experience with my grandfather who had Alzheimer’s and didn’t recognize me when, at 9 years old, I came to visit him.
So, this organization, called “Music and Memory“(2), has resources about how to put together a music list that is most likely to bring a sparkle back to the eyes of your relative with Alzheimer’s. There are NUMEROUS, remarkable changes in demeanor and activity. The organization also has programs for the entire care facility to get trained and started with all their residents.
Here’s another video of an interview by Katie Couric(3) discussing the documentary(4) about the transformation that occurs in the people.
How well does it work? So far, in a bout 600 different facilities, it is having a significantly positive effect in 30-60% of the people who try it. That’s incredible! Music! That’s it. I’m not much of a music-lover, but I like it a lot more now, just because of how it can bring life back to these forgotten, helpless souls.
They actually made an entire movie about it. (4)
I have contacted them about my educating local care facilities and others with their protocols. I would LOVE to see those changes personally. If you want more information, please contact “Music and Memory“(2).
